In a high-ceilinged studio at the Lions Gate film complex earlier this month, the Police were rehearsing for a very public first gig: opening the Grammy awards broadcast last Sunday with their 1978 hit "Roxanne" before announcing a world tour the next day. Interview: LUTE NEWS (2006)

As a lute player, you would probably have to have been trapped at the bottom of a mineshaft or working on the international space station for the last six months not to have heard about Sting's new album of Dowland lute songs, recorded with Bosnian lutenist Edin Karamazov, and released on the Deutsche Grammophon label in a welter of publicity, a couple of months ago. It has quickly become the all-time best-selling Dowland album, and got to no. 24 in the UK pop charts, no. 25 in the USA, no. 11 in Germany and no. 10 in Italy. It reached the top of the classical charts in France and elsewhere.

In the closing pages of his 2003 memoir, 'Broken Music', Sting reveals that he didn't go to his parents funerals. Sting has picked up the music of John Dowland, writes Robert Everett-Green. It's centuries old, but loaded with pop hooks. Lots of rock stars cover old songs, but hardly any go quite as far as Sting. The tunes on his latest album are all at least 400 years old, and were well known to the first English queen named Elizabeth. The first time Sting and the lutanist Edin Karamazov met, years ago, Mr. Karamazov's group was performing the music of Mozart, Vivaldi and Khatchaturian between acts at the Circus Roncalli in Hamburg, Germany, and Sting was in the audience. The British rock star talks about his fascination with the music of the great Elizabethan lutenist. "The song is so magical that it blew me away when I first heard it.
